From the City Coins auction, 4 November 2022

ABO (Burger A. S. van Rooyen)

Andries Stefanus van Rooyen 25 years old of Weltevreden, Somerset East and served in Lotter’s Kommando. He took part in battles in Cape Province. Captured at Paardefontein on 5 September 1901.

As a “Cape Rebel” he was sentenced to death on 23 September 1901 in Graaf Reinet. Commuted to “Penal Servitude” for life in Bermuda for High Treason under arms, murder, and marauding. Royal Commission reduced sentence to 3 years. Returned to the Cape Colony in February 1903. Arrived at Tokai Goal on 16 February 1903 as prisoner No. 481. Amnestied 26 March 1903.
