After joining up on 11 October 1899 Gert van Vuuren saw action at Modderspruit (20 October 1899), Colenso, Pieters Hill and Spioenkop and subsequently in the Boers eastwards retreat at Donkerhoek (Diamond Hill). He did not mention on Vorm “B” what Commando he initially joined. However, at some stage after mid-1900, when ZAR State Attorney Jan Smuts was commissioned, he joined the latter’s Commando (Smuts signed his Vorm “B” on 2 places).

He specifically mentions being present at the Steinkopf engagements.
