Frederick Johannes van Wijk of Kestell served as a Lieutenant in the OFS Verkenners Korps from 3 October 1899 to 31 May 1902 when as an officer. He kept his rifle when peace was declared.

On form A Commandant J de Wet of Reitz described him as “zeer dapper en uitnemend vertroubaar”. He was in action at Swartbooiskop, an hour and a half to the south of Nicholson's Nek, Paardeberg, Kimberley Waterworks, Bloemfontein, Modder River and many others.
