ABO (Burger J.C.S. Viljoen). City Coins August 2014

On his Vorm “B” medal application Jacobus Viljoen of the Utrecht Commando gave his rank as “Burgher in Artillery” and under Officers he listed Commandant Truter of the Utrecht Commando and Captain Pretorius of the Staatsartillerie.

In a 1946 M.Litt thesis on the ZAR Artillery, it is confirmed that Viljoen was Artillerist No. 507 and served between 1896 and 1898. It is therefore quite probable that he re-enlisted in the Artillery after October 1899 and that later-on he was part of a gun crew attached to the Utrecht Commando. He saw extensive Boer War service: Dundee, Spionkop, Colenso, Spieshoek (Blood River Poort), Dalmanutha, etc.
