He initially served on the Western Front. He was in action at the battle of Roodewal (11 April 1902), and probably formed part of the “ragged wall of horsemen” accompanying his commanding officer, Kommandant Potgieter, when the latter rode fearlessly to his death.

In my recent account of the Rustenberg Commando, I referred to the Boers final battle in the western Transvaal as taking place at 'Rooiwal", rather than 'Roodewal'. I wonder if there is now a generally accepted version of the spelling?
There was an earlier battle on 7 June 1900 at a 'Roodewal' in the Orange Free State. There is also a "Roodewal' near Rustenberg, and perhaps even other ones.

I have seen those different spellings and always thought they were different versions of the same place but you're making me doubt this assumption now.
