ABO (Burger J.J. Wagner). City Coins 66. August 2015

Jacobus Johannes Wagner was 17 years old when he died of typhoid near Sandrivier in the Waterberg (Northern Transvaal) on 1 September 1900. Due to his age, he had only joined the Vredefort Commando in May 1900, but soon afterwards saw, what was probably his first action, at Roodewal (7/8 June 1900) where Gen. de Wet overwhelmed the garrison and destroyed huge amounts of supplies and mails. After further incidents at Venterskroon and Bethlehem, he moved with a commando (not Gen. de Wet’s as stated on Vorm “B”) up North, where he succumbed to the same disease that killed some thousands of British troops.

The medal was claimed by his father in November 1922.
