Thank you for recording this. He was my paternal grandfather who also served in North Africa. He was under age and although a genius on the piano and with mathematics, fell into bad company - becoming an alcoholic. Years later in great despair and loneliness he took his own life. My father who was 16 years old at the time, had to travel by train from Johannesburg to East London to accompany his fathers body back for burial in Johannesburg. This left a deep impression on my father who would grow up to be vehemently against the consumption of alcohol. This value was adopted along with his other traits of health, discipline and hard work by his eldest son Bradley. That's me. I was blessed to have very loving parents. My great grandmother also died in the British concentration camps. [ ** ]

Does anyone know what these ribbons and medals were awarded for?

Some image lookups led me to discover that the ribbon and medal on the left was the Iron Cross second class -awarded for bravery. German origins as is our family name which means Man of the Forest.
