HONORING THE BRAVE.

That Allan’s Flat is not one whit behind the rest of the world where practical patriotic enthusiasm is concerned was sufficiently demonstrated last Friday night, when a “welcome home” social was tendered to Private DUELL, of the Fifth Mounted Rifles, on his return from South Africa.

The Allan’s Flat State-school, where the function was held, was filled to its utmost capacity, and many were unable to obtain admittance.

The chair was taken at 8 p.m. by Mr. John Bowran. Beside him sat the guest of the evening, supported by Privates Jas. CLINGIN and PAYNE, who had travelled down from Yackandandah and Beechworth, respectively, expressly to be present. …….

……. The Chairman then proceeded to hand Mr DUELL a handsome gold chain and also a gold medal. The medal contained on one side the inscription, neatly engraved – “Presented to Private Duell, of the Fifth Mounted Rifles, on his return from South Africa, by the residents of Allan’s Flat.” On the obverse side was engraved the returned soldier’s monogram.

Note: Private PAYNE received a medal from the people of Beechworth.
