The Queenslander of March 13th [sic] contains the following, with a photo of Mr Edwin HUXTABLE, brother of Messrs J.C. and C.G.P. Huxtable, of South Molton, who left home for Brisbane about 12 years ago – “Mr HUXTABLE volunteered to do battle for his old country with the 3rd Australian contingent, now at Beira, South Africa. Mr HUXTABLE was, before he left South Molton, for many years a member of the South Molton Volunteer Corps. Before leaving Brisbane for the front, he was the recipient of several handsome presents. The Masonic Lodge of Toowong, of which he was a member, presented him with a splendid silver match box, suitably engraved; a few old friends a silver-mounted pipe; and the Fire Brigade, of which he was the late Superintendent, presented him with a silver medal. The presents were presented at a large meeting, where £114 was collected for the whole contingent”.
