BULN BULN EAST.

The “smoke-night” held here in honor of Trooper A. CAMPBELL was unique; nothing of the kind having ever approached it in the district. Good-fellowship prevailed – old and young vied with each other to excel in innocent mirth. Splendid music was given during the evening by the trio, Messrs M. Ryan, W. Hart, and J. Halford. Mr Philip G. King conducted the meeting, making a most proficient chairman. Songs, recitations, and anecdotes kept the hose bubbling over with roars of laughter.

“The King’s Health” was the first toast, followed by the national anthem being sung – then the “The Guest of the Evening” (Trooper A. CAMPBELL) who responded splendidly. A handsome gold chain and locket, on which was beautifully engraved (by Mr Day, of Warragul) the inscription, “Presented to Trooper A. Campbell, by his friends of Buln Buln E., for services in South Africa”. In thanking the friends present, Trooper CAMPBELL said he had but tried his best to do his duty when in the field, and he was proud to see his honest efforts to serve his King and country were so handsomely appreciated by his friends at home. (Cheers). Refreshments were provided in abundance. The freedom of the Rifle Club was given by the Captain to the guest, i.e., an honorary membership. Cr. Fink was to be seen everywhere, doing his utmost to enhance the pleasure of others. A splendid military programme was given and was contributed to by the following gentlemen – Messrs Ryan, Hart, Halford, Crabbe, Woolcot and Fowler.
