PRESENTATION TO PRIVATE W. CHAMBERLAIN.

A very pleasant function took place on Monday evening last at the residence of Mr D.A.D. Perry, Bulimba, in the form of a welcome and presentation to Private W. CHAMBERLAIN, of the First Contingent, on his return from South Africa. A gold medal was presented, of beautiful design, inscribed as follows – “To Private W. Chamberlain, on his return from South Africa, as a mark of esteem from his fellow-starboarders”. Mr Perry made the presentation. In conclusion, he stated that the company assembled there that evening were delighted at having the “hero” once more in their midst, safe and sound, and looking the very picture of health and happiness. Mr CHAMBERLAIN, in responding, thanked those present for the handsome and kindly way in which they had welcomed him back to dear old Queensland. The handsome gift with which they had presented him would always be cherished by him, not merely for its intrinsic value but as a token of the high esteem in which they held him. Pleased as he was to get home again, should duty again call he would gladly respond, and he felt sure that all the comrades who have returned would do likewise. The party, including a goodly sprinkling of the fair sex, also Sergeant W. McLEOD, and Privates G. STRONG and T. BRAITHWAITE, of the First Contingent, then adjourned for supper, after which a pleasant time was spent in dancing, music, and song.
