BIRTLEY.
Public welcome was given by a large and enthusiastic meeting in Birtley Church Institute on Wednesday night to Privates James HUNTER, John ROBSON, and Thomas CARR, of the 4th V.B.D.L.I., who have recently returned from active service in South Africa. The chair was taken by Mr F. Jones, and an excellent programme was rendered. Privates HUNTER and ROBSON were each presented with a handsome silver lever watch and albert, with appendage, and Private CARR was given a pair of field glasses. These things were the gifts of Birtley inhabitants. Mr J.M. Lawson made the presentations.
