CARRIETON, May 2.

An enthusiastic welcome home social was tendered in the council chamber last night to Tpr. H.E. JORDAN, a member of the 6th Contingent. The guest of the evening was among the most popular of the youth of our district, and much satisfaction was expressed that, though he was in the commando each day of the time spent in South Africa, and had many narrow escapes, yet he escaped wound or scar Lieut. J.W. Boek escorted the returned soldier from his home, and introduced him to the meeting. A good programme of vocal and instrumental music was rendered by local amateurs, under the direction of Mr J. Kollosche, M.A.  Several pleasing selections on the gramophone were given by Mr J.H. Schilling, of Belton. Mr J. McGIashan presented Tpr. JORDAN with a gold medal and bar, and extended a cordial welcome to the returned soldier. Speeches of a eulogistic nature were made by Lieut. Boek and Messrs W.J. Gleeson, P. Fox, N. McNaughton, J. Kollosche, M.A., W.J. O'Grady, J.F. Fisher, and S.H. Williams. Tpr. JORDAN, in a modest and manly speech, expressed thanks. Mr J. Jordan, our esteemed postmaster, also expressed his gratification at the reception tendered to his son. Mesdames Kollosche, O'Grady, Byerlee, Fox, and Misses McNaughton and O'Grady dispensed refreshments. Dancing followed.
