Watch inscribed: "Trooper Daly, New South Wales Lancers, from Britons in Chile; South African War, 1901".
"When in South Africa in the capacity of a trooper in the NSW Lancers, Mr Daly on one occasion acted in a kind manner to some people from Chile who were stricken with fever in Victoria, and now, after five years, he is the recipient of this valuable present, which, no doubt, was a great surprise" (Sydney Freeman's Journal, 22/09/1906).

Mr Arthur DALY [sic], of Alstonville, and son of Mr Owen Daly, Ballina, has been the recipient of a handsome present in the form of a gold watch (valued at £50) from friends in Chile (South America). When in South Africa in the capacity of a trooper in the N.S.W. Lancers, Mr. DALY on one occasion acted in a kind manner to same people from Chile who were stricken with fever in Victoria, and now, after five years, he is the recipient of this valuable present, which, no doubt, was a great surprise. The following is the inscription on the watch: — “Trooper Daly, New South Wales Lancers, from Britons in Chile, South African War, 1901”.

Arthur lived and died in Kensington NSW, he lost a leg in the Boer war. He was married to Laura and had seven children. He was awarded a gold cross and chain by the Chilean government for the effective release of Chilean prisoners of war.
