WELCOMES IN THE COUNTRY.
CLUNES. – On Monday Corporal F.H. CARTER and Trooper A. McKENZIE, of the Australian Imperial Regiment, received a warm welcome home from the townspeople on their return from South Africa. Both men wore the South African war medal, and both appeared in best of health. They were carried on the shoulders of their former comrades in the Clunes contingent of the Victorian Mounted Rifles and Clunes Fire Brigade to a gaily-decorated hook and ladder carriage, and a procession including the mayor and councillors, was formed, and to the music of the local brass band proceeded to the Town Hall, in front of which they were formally welcomed by the Mayor on behalf of the community. In the evening Trooper McKENZIE was entertained by the Fire Brigade of which he had been a member, and presented with a gold medal. On Tuesday night at a Wesleyan social gathering in honour of the return Corporal CARTER was also presented with a gold medal by the Wesleyan choir, with which he had been connected. Both medals were suitably inscribed.
