Clutha Leader, 8th April 1902
The members of The Leader staff met "around the stone" on Saturday morning to mark the esteem in which they hold one who for many years has been manager in the composing and printing department — Captain W. S. PENNYCOOK, on the eve of his departure to take up a captaincy in the Tenth Contingent. Mr W. Battrick, in asking Captain PENNYCOOK to accept a gold locket as a small token of their esteem, referred to the high opinion entertained of him, and hoped that he would return from the war in good health and crowned with honours. Captain PENNYCOOK thanked the staff heartily for their good wishes, and hoped that while in South Africa he would be able to do his duty, and fully maintain the good name that Clutha has already obtained. He hoped they would all have a prosperous and happy time during his absence.
