CRESSY, Monday.
A social was held in the Town Hall on Friday evening for the purpose of welcoming home Trooper L. A. HERBERT, a member of the Tasmanian quota of the Imperial Australian contingent, who recently returned from South Africa invalided. Mr. D. Campbell presided, and there was a large attendance of residents and friends of the returned soldier. Lieutenant Cole, Sergeant E. H. Lee, Troopers L. A. HERBERT and W. Burton occupied seats on the platform. The stage was artistically decorated with flags. The chairman, on behalf of the residents of Cressy, presented Trooper HERBERT with a gold medal and a purse of money as a memento of his service in South Africa. The recipient in responding thanked the donors for their expression of goodwill, and expressed regret that he had been unable to remain with the contingent until its return to Tasmania. During the evening Misses E. Brumby, Newton, Miller (2), A. Brumby, and Eastoe, Mrs Wilkinson, and Messrs Howard Button, E. Stubbs, and school children contributed a choice programme of vocal and instrumental music, the proceedings terminating with the National Anthem.
