CREETOWN. – Private P.J. BIRRELL, who was laid up with enteric fever and unable to accompany the Galloways on their return, arrived home on Thursday, and had a most enthusiastic reception. Elaborate preparations had been made to welcome him, but these were modified on account of the Queen’s death. He was carried shoulder-high to the Square, where a platform had been erected, and in the presence of a vast crowd presented by the Town Clerk with an illuminated address and a gold medal by the Town Council. The khaki lad was privately entertained by the Town Council at Bailie Thomson’s residence. Here he exhibited a number of curiosities which he had picked up on the battlefield.
