CAMBRIANS.

Honour to Whom Honour is Due.

On Friday night, the 12th [sic], Trooper Thomas MEE, a member of the fourth contingent, was entertained by his brother Oddfellows at an enthusiastic social gathering, one of the largest witnessed for some time. The hall was decorated nicely, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. Songs were rendered during the evening by Miss Corliss, Misses J. and M. Renwick, Dr Stenhouse, Mrs Mills, Mr Allan, and Mrs Osborne, and Mr Ballad contributed a step dance and Mr P. Hanrahan a jig. A presentation was made to the returned trooper by Dr Stenhouse of a Maltese cross. The doctor said it gave him great pleasure to present Brother MEE with the cross as a small recognition of his services in South Africa. If duty called he was sure Trooper MEE would not hesitate to ride up to the cannon's mouth. In reply, the trooper thanked his brother Oddfellows very cordially, and remarked that the doctor was saying too much when he said he would ride up to the cannon's mouth. Very few New Zealanders would do that if a rock were in sight. It quite took him by surprise to see so many friends present to welcome him home again. Dancing was kept up till the small hours, when all went home well satisfied. Refreshments were handed round, and were done justice to by all. Mr E. Morgan supplied the music in good style.

CAMBRIANS.

August 12.

The Oddfellows held their anniversary ball on the 9th inst., and though its success was somewhat interfered with on account of the weather, everything passed off very nicely. They also made a presentation to Bro. Corporal THURLOW, of the fourth contingent, of a Maltese cross. The presentation was made by Bro. Edward Morgan, who said they were all proud of the way Bro. THURLOW had conducted himself in the Transvaal, and it afforded him great pleasure to present the corporal with the handsome medal and he hoped he would live long to wear it. Corporal THURLOW made a short speech, saying he was very glad to get back to New Zealand and meet so many acquaintances. He would long remember the kindness of the folk of Cambrians and St Bathans. He also thanked his brother Oddfellows for their gift. Speeches were then made by Mr William Thurlow (uncle of the corporal), Mr John Allen, and Mr Edward Gerkins. Songs were rendered by Mr Allan, Mrs Mills, Mr W. Thurlow, Mr J. Thurlow, Mr Osborne, Mr Ballard, Mr Brown, Miss Bruce, and a jig was given by Mr P. Hanrahan. Refreshments were handed round twice during the night, and were done ample justice to. Dancing was kept up till an early hour. Mr J. Morgan made an efficient M.C., and Mr E. Morgan and Mrs Mills supplied the music. The catering was in the efficient hands of Mrs S. McGuckin.
