WELCOME HOME TO A CAMBOIS SOLDIER.
At the Seven Stars Inn, North Blyth, on Saturday night, a social gathering was arranged, the chief object of which was to give a welcome home to Trooper J. WATSON (of Cambois), of the South African Light Horse. There was a capital attendance. Mr J. Wardle occupied the chair, and in a capital speech, welcomed the gallant trooper back to his native heath in the name of the gathering. Mr Hugh Connell next presented Trooper WATSON with a gold medal, and in doing so referred to the war and the noble part played by the Colonials like the recipient, who, in the hour of England’s need, volunteered to serve their country. On behalf of Mr and Mrs William Brodie, the host and hostess, the chairman also presented the guest of the evening with a handsome meerschaum pipe. Trooper WATSON suitably acknowledged the presents and the hearty welcome extended to him. Refreshments were served during the evening, and the convivial side of the gathering was of a hearty kind. Songs were sung by Messrs J. Smith, J. Carr, S. Warnes, M. Carr, J. McAllister, T. Gair, W. Green, J. Gair, Trooper WATSON, &c. Mr A. Dent provided a whistling selection, and also a tune on the gramophone, whilst Mer Percy gave a performance with glasses and spoons.
