Presentation to a Dunston Soldier.
At the Keel Hotel, Dunston, on Saturday night, a large company assembled for the purpose of making suitable presentations to Private G. GASH, of the Northumberland Fusiliers, on the occasion of his return home from South Africa. The gifts, which included a gold watch, albert, pendant, and silver-mounted pipe, were the presents of the trimmers, teamers and others connected with the Dunston Staiths, and were handed over, on their behalf, by Mr William Taylor, staith master. Private GASH responded. During the evening a programme of harmony was gone through, songs, etc., being given by Messrs C. Rodd, J. Killen, W. Lyons, D. Wilkinson (banjo solo), A. Eltringham, and others. It was stated that the workmen employed at the coal staiths had subscribed the sum of about 15s per week, and which, up to the end of June, amounted to £100.
