SOCIAL TO PRIVATE SPREADBURY

A welcome social was tendered to Private A. SPREADBURY, of the First W.A. Contingent, by his fellow employees of the firm of G.P. Harris, Scarfe and Co., in the Rechabite Hall a few days ago. There were about 40 of the employees present, also a few visitors. The chair was taken by Mr Hamnett. "The Queen" was proposed by the chairman and was drank with musical honours. The next toast, "The Finn", was proposed by Mr A. Richter, who spoke of the rapid strides that the firm had made in W.A., and the bright outlook of the future. The chairman responded. "Our Guest" was next, and the chairman, in proposing it, said that he and all, his fellow employees were glad to welcome Private A. SPREADBURY back, and had the greatest pleasure in presenting him with a gold medal, suitably inscribed, on behalf of the employees of the firm.

Private SPREADBURY, in replying to the toast, said he thanked his fellow employees very much, and was agreeably surprised at receiving such a token of their esteem, and would remember this occasion so long as he lived. At the conclusion of this little speech a call for three cheers was heartily responded to.

The musical part of the programme, which was a lengthy one, was then gone through. Mr Gorton sang four songs, and the following gentlemen also contributed: — Messrs Johns, Carter, May, L. Weight, J. Foale, J. Sayer, and D. Hicks. A most enjoyable evening was spent, which was brought to a conclusion with the singing of the National Anthem and Auld Lang Syne.
