PRESENTATION TO TROOPER SQUIRE.

Tuesday, August 27, 1901, will long be remembered as a gala day by the residents of Glenroy. Unlike the sleepy-going folk of Tumbarumba (who never “bothered” about the return of any of the soldiers from S. Africa), the good folk of Glenroy, fired with a spirit of loyalty to their friend and Empire alike, immediately the return of Trooper Oswald SQUIRE was made known, set to work and prepared a grand banquet and presentation as a welcome home to him. The following gentlemen were appointed aa a committee of management: — Messrs Thornley, Larkins, J. McAuliffe, A. McGlynn, W. Bullock, 0. Cayirylys, H. Clegg, E. Woodhouse (treasurer), and F.S. Sykes (hon. sec). From what I can learn the greatest amount of credit is due to Mr Sykes, as secretary, and Mr Cayirylys, as collector, for the success of the undertaking. Gaily decorated rooms, a sumptuous banquet, and plenty of music was the comfort and greeting accorded those who presented themselves at Glenroy Hotel on Tuesday evening, and, despite the incessant rain, over a hundred ladies and gentlemen were present, a number being residents of Tumbarumba. The chair was ably filled by Mr S.F. Ramsay, Trooper SQUIRE being seated on his right. The toast of “The King” was proposed by Mr Ramsay, and duly honoured with the singing of the National Anthem. “The Army” was proposed by Mr Cayirylys and responded to by Mr Nicolson; whilst Mr Lewis, J.P., rose to the occasion with “Our Guest”. “The Ladies” was proposed by Mr J.J. McAlister and responded to on behalf of the ladies by Mr Alf. Lukins, after which Trooper SQUIRE was presented with a handsome gold medal, which bears the inscription on the obverse “Elands River, South Africa”, and the monogram of Mr SQUIRE, whilst on the reverse side of the medal is the following: “Presented to Trooper Oswald A. Squire by the residents of Glenroy and the district, in recognition of his services to the Empire during the Boer War of 1900-01”. A handsome silver-mounted cigar holder also accompanied the medal. The trooper, in a few well-chosen remarks, thanked his friends for their kindness to him by their tendering not only the banquet to him but also such beautiful presents. After briefly recounting some of his adventures in South Africa, Trooper SQUIRE sat down amidst great applause, and the company joined in singing “For he's a jolly good fellow”. At the conclusion of the banquet a right jolly time was spent by the company with dancing and music.
