GLOUCESTER WAGON COMPANY.

RESERVISTS’ SMOKING CONCERT.

A smoking concert was given by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company Limited’s Army Reservists at the Wheatsheaf Inn, Southgate Street. In the unavoidable absence of Mr A. Slater and Mr J.W. Howard, the chair was taken by the City High Sheriff (Ald. G.A. Baker), supported by Councillor J. Minahan. There was a large attendance of the Company’s employees. In the interval of a long, varied, and interesting programme, the Chairman, in a few well-chosen words, which were well received, made a present of a medal, or watch chain charm, engraved with the initials of each member of the Army Reservist Fund Committee as a small token of thanks and respect to the Committee for the interest they had taken in the Reservists’ wives and children’s welfare while the men were serving in South Africa. Lance-Corporal MILLS, on behalf of the Reservists, proposed a vote of thanks to Messrs Slater and Howard and the Company’s staff, and all their fellow-workmen for the great kindness shown to them while away in South Africa. Private TURNER seconded. A vote of thanks was most heartily accorded the City High Sheriff and Councillor J. Minahan for their kind services, and a most enjoyable evening was brought to a close with the National Anthem. The following assisted with the programme – Messrs T. Richardson, Jelf, W. Clarke, J. Vickery, G. Mallard, jun., C. Smart, E. Compton, W. Ward, and G. Ellis. Most of the items were vociferously encored.

The total amount collected and disbursed by this Fund Committee was £271 13s 9 ½d, and support was afforded to 12 Reservists’ wives and 21 children.
