A welcome home and smoke night was accorded to Trooper David JOHNSON, of the 5th Victorian Contingent, on Friday evening last, the 14th inst., in the Gobur Public Hall, after his safe return from the South African war. Mr C. Edwards, sen., was chairman, ably supported by Mr T. Cumming. The proceedings commenced with a patriotic speech by the chairman, who proposed the toast of The King, which was drunk with enthusiasm. The toast of the evening, Our Guest, was then given and responded to in a very hearty manner. Trooper JOHNSON replied in suitable terms, and related a few of his experiences at the front. Our Army and Navy was proposed by Mr J. Besanko, and responded to by Mr B. Head, after which the chairman presented Trooper JOHNSON with a gold medal, suitably inscribed with his name and corps, on behalf of the residents of Gobur. Trooper JOHNSON received an ovation on rising, and thanked the company present in a few brief and well-chosen words. The affair was a great success from a patriotic point of view, and during the evening the programme was interspersed with vocal music by the following gentlemen – Messrs J. Edwards, W. Palmer, Jas. Creighton, W. Hines, C. Lond, and B. Head.
