GOBOWEN.

Yesterday in continuation of the rejoicings about 300 children were entertained to tea in the Assembly Room. The arrangements were carried out by the committee headed by Mrs Browne (the Vicarage), and Miss Phillips (Alder Cottage). Sergt. DOWNES, with Privates FRASER, DAVIES and GLOVER, who have also returned from the war, were honoured guests at the gathering. …….

……. Subsequently, at a public meeting held in the hall, a presentation was made. The Vicar (the Rev. G.O. Browne) presided, and was supported by Mrs Browne, Mr F. Boughey, and the four distinguished guests.

The Chairman said they were assembled there to publicly welcome home their brave countrymen only just returned from the seat of war. There was no quality so high as public spirit, and the spirit of self-sacrifice; and their friends had offered their lives to their country and, thank God! they had come back safely.

Afterwards Master W. Browne presented Privates FRASER, DAVIES, and GLOVER with silver engraved medals, and Sergeant DOWNES with a silver watch chain.

The recipients suitably expressed their thanks. Subsequently the little ones were entertained to games, and later in the evening a dance was held, the music being supplied by Mr Tims’ band.

Sergt. DOWNES will be entertained next week, and a further presentation is to be made to him on that occasion.
