Inspection of Sutherland Companies.
The annual inspection of the Sutherland H.R. Volunteer companies took place on the links at the west end of Golspie on Tuesday last. Not for many years back were the weather conditions so favourable as they were on Tuesday. Strong sunshine with an easterly wind blowing off the sea made the day both pleasant and bracing, while the grass was dry and crisp. A large number of the public found their way thither, and took a ken interest in the different manoeuvres. …….
……. The Clyde company arrived by the 11.41 a.m. train, and the Creich, Lairg, and Bonar companies arrived at the same time from the south by special train, while the Dornoch company travelled all the way by conveyances. …….
……. After having been detrained the battalion was formed into marching order at the Station, and headed by the pipe band, under Pipe-Major Macdonald, marched to the parade ground, where the colonel in command put them through the usual drill.
An Interesting Presentation.
After the inspection the battalion was formed into companies, and a most interesting ceremony was performed by the Inspecting-Officer [Colonel Grant] in the shape of presenting medals to Wm. MACKAY, George MACKAY, and Andrew MORRISON of the Golspie Company upon their return from South Africa. The officers and men of the Golspie company thought the patriotism and service rendered by these men in having volunteered to fight for the country deserved recognition at their hands, and it was resolved when they returned to give them a hearty welcome home, and to present them with a memento of the campaign, but as the inspection of the volunteers was to take place in a few weeks, it was resolved to postpone the presentation of the medals till then, and ask the Inspecting-Officer to make the presentation.
