14326 Quatermaster-Sergeant John GUNN, Royal Engineers, another local man who received the D.C.M. (gazetted 31/10/1902), and a brother-in-law of Sergeant-Major SUTHERLAND, may also have received a medal.

Note: this is a different medal to that given to Golspie Volunteers, as it was a gift from the Parish of Golspie rather than the Golspie Volunteer Company.

SUCCESS OF A GOLSPIE BOY AT THE FRONT. – In the Natal district orders, dated Newcastle, 24th October, 1901, the gallantry of Sergt.-Major SUTHERLAND of the 14th Hussars, on the Upper Tugela on 17th September, 1901, while in command of an advanced party was brought before the notice of the General Commanding in Chief. Sergt.-Major SUTHERLAND is a well-known Golspie boy, several of his relations being resident here. He is a brother of Mr John Sutherland, slater. The notice of his gallantry by the Commander-in-Chief will gratify his numerous friends in the district.

In the recently published list of honours in connection with the South African campaign appear the names of Squadron Sergeant-Major J.W. SUTHERLAND of the 14th Hussars and Quartermaster-Sergeant J. GUNN of the Electrical Engineers to have the Distinguished Conduct Medal. Both soldiers are well-known in Golspie, the former being a Golspie boy and a brother of Mr John Sutherland, slater, and the latter being a native of Clyne and a brother-in-law of Mr SUTHERLAND. Their families will be pleased to hear that their services to the crown have been suitably noticed.
