PRESENTATIONS.

The members and friends of the Linwood Thistle Football Club met in the Buck’s Head Hall, on Saturday evening, for the purpose of doing honour to two of their number, Privates Peter GRANT and George ROSS, who are leaving the village for the seat of war in South Africa. These two young men, who are connected with F Company, 2nd V.B.A. and S.H., volunteered for active service at the front over a year ago, and have just been called up to proceed to South Africa. Mr John Lochhead, in the absence of the president of the club, occupied the chair, and was supported on the platform by Messrs Robert Ross, William Stark, P. McHugh, and others. The chairman, in his opening remarks, after stating the object of the meeting, referred to the character of Privates GRANT and ROSS, and expressed the sincere desire that they would be spared to return again soon to their native village. He then called upon Mr Stark, who, in a few well-chosen remarks, presented Privates GRANT and ROSS with a marble timepiece each, and also with pipes and tobacco, etc. The recipients suitably replied, after which the meeting took the form of a “smoker”, when songs, etc., were contributed by members of the company. Privates GRANT and ROSS were also the recipients of valuable presents from their fellow-workmen in Johnstone, including a mahogany writing-desk to Private GRANT and a gold albert and appendage to Private ROSS, as well as other minor articles. They also received a sovereign each from members of F Company of the Volunteer Battalion. A very pleasant and sociable meeting terminated with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne”.
