THE FOURTH AND FIFTH CONTINGENTS.
WELCOMING THE TROOPERS.
Last evening there was a very large attendance of the public of the Kaiapoi district in the volunteer drill hall of their town to receive ten of the returned troops — namely, Sergeant B. STRONG, Corporal DUNLOP, Troopers L. RIDLEY, C. THRELKELD, J. LORRIMER, R. JOHNSTON, —SIMPSON, and J. HILL (of the New Zealand Contingents), and Trooper STYLES (of Rimington's Guides). The stage and hall were handsomely decorated, and the Rifle volunteers and Cadets formed a guard of honour. The National Anthem was sung, after which the Mayor, Mr J. Daly, made a speech of welcome and an address was also given by Captain E.E. Papprill, of the Rifle Volunteers. The presentation of gold Maltese crosses, suitably engraved, was made by Mrs Daly, and the men were loudly cheered. Songs, etc., were arranged to be given by Misses Baker, Young, and Wilson, Messrs Blackwell, Bennett, Johnson, Matthews, Leithead, Last, Templeton, dances, seantreus, Miss Elder, and hornpipe by Mr Driscoll, and Mr R. Holland a recitation. Refreshments on a liberal scale were provided by a large Ladies' Committee, and a dance concluded the proceedings.
THE CORONATION.
KAIAPOI.
On Saturday tree-planting operations were conducted at 10 a.m. at the Borough School, and half an hour later an imposing procession left Hilton Street and paraded the town, finally reaching Kaiapoi Park. …….
TROOPERS' WELCOME AT KAIAPOI.
There was no lack of warmth in the welcome held at Kaiapoi last night to the officers and troopers who have returned from South Africa. The gathering was held in the Kaiapoi Drill Hall, which was crowded in every part. The proceedings included the presentation of thirty gold Maltese crosses for the troops, and a gold brooch, with red cross set in rubies, to Nurse Ada HIATT. The Mayor, Mr J. Daly, presided.
The Chairman referred to the sending away of the Contingents, and the pleasure all felt that no casualties had happened to those from the district. Nurse HIATT had seen nearly two and a half years' service on the battlefield, and in the Mooi River hospital, and if the officers and men had reached the war too late it was not their fault. He extended them, on behalf of tba people a hearty welcome. Telegrams of apology were read from Mr W. Hall-Jones and Major-General Babington, who were invited. The gold brooch was presented, amid cheers, to Miss HIATT, and the gold Maltese crosses by Mrs Daly to the following — Captain D. COSSGROVE, Lieut. T. CAPSTICK, Sergeant-Major G. SIMPSON, Provost-Sergeant C. BENNETT, Saddler-Sergeant H. DRISCOLL, Sergeant D.W.L. MEHRTENS, Sergeant F. COX, Corporals J. HOLLAND, H. KEETLEY, and J. DUNCAN, Bugler T. BARDON, Troopers C. DRISCOLL, J. BELCHER, P. MELLOR, L. REVELL, M. GALLAGHER, A. MORTLAND, J. HAMMOND[sic], J. SIMPSON, C. MITCHELL, L. MOORE, T. MARTIN, Geo. ANDERSON, E. LYNSKEY, G. HASSALL, J. ASHTON and C MOODY.
WELCOME HOME TO TROOPERS.
On Tuesday evening the Drill Hall at Kaiapoi was quite filled by residents of the district, who had gathered to assist in the "welcome home" to the Kaiapoi and district members of the returned Contingents. On the platform were the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs J. Daly), the Rev J. Holland, the Rev J. Luxford, chaplain to the Tenth Contingent, Major Andrew, Captain COSGROVE, Nurse HIATT and others, and at the back was arranged seating accommodation for about thirty or more returned troopers. The Mayor addressed those present, and read apologies from General Babington, the Hon. W. Hall-Jones, Mr D. Buddo, M.H.R., the Mayor of Rangiora and others, who all expressed regret at not being present.
The first part of the evening was taken up by songs given by Misses Alexander and Young, and Messrs W. Blackwell and J. Templeton. Addresses were delivered by the Revs J. Holland and. J. Luxford, Major Andrew, an old Kaiapoi boy, and several others.
Then a presentation of a pretty gold brooch, accompanied by a red cross, was made to Nurse Ada HIATT, and a gold Maltese cross, suitably engraved, was handed to each of the troopers. The names of the recipients were: — Captain D. COSSGROVE, Lieutenant T. CAPSTICK, Sergeant-Major G. SIMPSON, Provost-Sergeant C. BENNETT, Saddler-Sergeant H. DRISCOLL, Sergeants F. COX and D.W.L. MEHRTENS, Corporals J. HOLLAND and H. KEITLEY, Bugler T. BARDEN, Troopers L. REVELL, Lionel MOORE, P. MELLOR, M. GALLAGHER, A. MORTLAND, James HAMMON, C. MITCHELL, A. MORTLAND, Geo. ANDERSON, G. HASSALL, E. LYNSKEY, T. MARTIN, C. MOODY, J. ASHTON, J. DUNCAN and C. DRISCOLL.
Refreshments were then dispensed, and the evening's amusement was wound up by an enjoyable ball. The receipts were ample to meet all claims in connection with the whole affair.
During the evening the Mayor said that shortly another public meeting would be called to decide what should be done with the surplus from the Patriotic Fund.
