Kaitangata
On Friday evening last Trooper FARQUHAR of the Sixth Contingent was tendered a welcome home by the Kaitangata Rifles. McKay's Hall was comfortably filled for the occasion. Captain Rutherford was in the chair, and welcomed Trooper FARQUHAR in quite an eulogistic speech, mentioning the good work done at the front by men from New Zealand, and their comrade in particular. The captain was pleased to see Trooper FARQUHAR looking so well after the hard work done in South Africa, and proceeded to the most pleasing part of the function — viz., to present on behalf of the Kaitangata Rifles a beautiful gold Maltese cross, bearing the following inscription — "Presented to Trooper Farquhar by the Kaitangata Rifles, 23/5/02". The gallant trooper acknowledged the gift in a natty, humorous speech, after which the hall was put in order for dancing, about 50 couples tripping the light fantastic to the music of Mr McFadyen (violin), Bisset (violin), Somerville (cornet), and Miss Duncan (piano); the company breaking up about 3 a.m. Corpl. Bryce and Vol. Lawrence acted as M.C.'s.
