PRESENTATION TO SOUTH AFRICAN HEROES.

On Friday evening of last week a public meeting was held in the Town Hall for the purpose of presenting Mr Thomas OWENS, late driver in the Royal Field Artillery, who was engaged at the opening of the war in South Africa, and who had the great misfortune of losing an eye at the battle of Modder River, with a silver watch, albert, and pendant, suitably inscribed, and subscribed for by the inhabitants of Kidwelly through Mr John Rogers, fishmonger, with whom the presentation originated. The ex-Mayor, Alderman J.G. Anthony, presided, and addressed some very practical remarks and good advice to Owens. The presentation was formally made by Councillor George Jones, Councillor John Jones also being present and speaking. The watch was inscribed, “Presented to Thomas Owens for services rendered in the South African War”, and the pendant inscribed, “Thos. Owens, Modder River”.
