PRESENTATION TO A LEEDS VOLUNTEER TELEGRAPHIST.

An enjoyable “smoker” took place at the Green Dragon Hotel last evening, on the occasion of the departure of Mr J. NUNWICK, of the Leeds Postal Telegraph Staff, for service in South Africa, with the Royal Engineers’ telegraph section. Mr NUNWICK, who has been 15 years in the service, volunteered some months ago, and will sail immediately with a strong telegraph detachment to reinforce the telegraph section now at the front. Mr H.F. Plackett occupied the chair, and a large company was present.

The Chairman made a presentation of a gold medal and various useful articles on behalf of Mr NUNWICK’s colleagues, and spoke in high terms of the recipient, as did several others.

Mr NUNWICK, in replying, thanked them for their kind expressions of good fellowship, and trusted that when he returned after serving his country, he would find as many friends to welcome him back. The rest of the evening was devoted to harmony. Mr NUNWICK leaves by the 1.10 p.m. today for Aldershot.
