COMPLIMENTARY DINNER.
In honour of the safe return from South Africa of Trooper S. WHYSALL, of the Leicestershire Imperial Yeomanry, eldest son of Mr and Mrs J.F. Whysall, of the Red Lion Inn, a complimentary dinner was held in the clubroom of the establishment on Saturday evening. As soon as the Yeomanry were disbanded at Aldershot a number of enthusiastic friends met and formed a committee to organise a suitable celebration. The arrangements were made and carried out by Messrs F. Beard (chairman), Cyril Beard, Isaac Barraclough, F. Causer, G. Clamp, J.W. Dennis, E. Tilley, and A. Swindell (secretary). Mrs Beard (Linton Manor House) manifested considerable interest in the event, and the committee left the purchasing of the present in the hands of Mr F. Beard. A good number of subscribers and guests sat down to a substantial repast, placed upon the tables by Host and Hostess Whysall. The dinner was splendidly served, and the tables, with Mr F. Beard at the head, were tastefully adorned with plants, while the room presented a pretty and animated appearance. After the cloths had been removed a social evening was spent, with Mr Cyril Beard, Mr N. Slade, Trooper H.E. COX (Castle Gresley), Trooper H. SWINNERTON (Cauldwell), C. Davis, sen., W. Flint (Burton), J. Whysall, W. Patrick, W. Dennis, sen., and A. Swindell. The vice-chair was occupied by Mr Isaac Barraclough, and he had as his supporters Trooper S. WHYSALL, Trooper W.J. HARDY (Burton), Messrs F.J. Jowett, J. Bradford, G. Clamp (Wallway), C. Davis, jun., W. Dennis, jun., and T. Bradford. A short toast list was submitted, the Chairman giving “The King”. After a verse of the National Anthem had been sung, Mr Dennis gave “The Queen and Royal Family”, which was loyally drunk. Letters of apology for non-attendance were read from the Rev. H.C. Tiarks (Linton Parsonage), District Councillor H.E. Cox (Castle Gresley), and W. Reader, the latter having gone through the campaign under Lord Methuen.
The toast of the evening, “Our Guest”, was given in a few well-chosen sentences by Mr Dennis, District Secretary, Swadlincote District A.O.F. He said he had great pleasure in asking the chairman to make a presentation on behalf of the subscribers to their brother Forester.
Mr Beard said this was a very pleasant duty, and it gave him great pleasure to hand over a solid gold albert and pendant to Trooper WHYSALL. It embodied the esteem in which he was held, a recognition of his services, and a token of their goodwill.
On accepting the gift, which bore the inscription, “Presented to Mr S. Whysall by friends on his safe return from the South African war, 1902”, Trooper WHYSALL was greeted with rounds of applause.
Mr Slade submitted the next toast, “The Visitors”. Troopers. H.E. COX, HARDY and SWINNERTON responding.
Mr G. Clamp gave “The secretary”, and Mr Barraclough “The chairman”.
Trooper COX proposed “The vice-chairman”, and Mr C. Beard “The host and hostess”.
