LUBECK.

Private W.J. DALTON, of the Second Victorian Contingent, was on Friday night, the 14th inst., presented with a gold medal. The presentation took place in the Lubeck Hall, the medal bearing the following inscription: “Presented to Private W.J. Dalton, in recognition of his services in the Transvaal the Transvaal war, South Africa,1900, by Lubeck and district”. The medal, which is octagonal in shape, is a fine piece of workmanship and cost £5 5s. Lieutenant Hutchings occupied the chair and the hall was crowded. Upon the invitation of Lieutenant Hutchings all rose and sang Home, Sweet Home. The presentation then took place. Miss C. Dyer pinned the medal on the breast of the young soldier.

Private DALTON in a few words thanked them all and said that the medal would be treasured by him as one of his most valued possessions.

Mr Dyer, M.L.A., who was received with cheers, was very pleased to be present. It gave him much pleasure to welcome back Private DALTON. He also spoke a good deal as to the share the late Minister of Defence had in the sending of the four contingents, and said that the Minister and Parliament had nothing to regret in sending men who had borne themselves so bravely and so honourably throughout the whole war, earlier in the day.

The children were treated to a picnic after the presentation. There was a concert, at which a rather lengthy though an enjoyable programme was gone through. Many of the singers and some who assisted in the musical items were from Rupanyup. Amongst these may be mentioned Miss Dyer, Mrs J.C. Hutchings, Mr George Hine and the Rev. Mr Geer, B.A.  After the concert there was a ball, and dancing was kept up till daylight, excellent music being provided. Piano, Miss Gerdtz; violin, Treany and W. Gready. Mr W. Gerdtz was M.C.  The committee of management deserves the thanks and congratulations of all concerned for the able manner in which they carried out their task.
