LUCINDALE, June 17.

On Friday evening last the Lucindale Defence Rifle Club entertained Trooper J.F. McLACHLAN, of the Bushmen's Contingent (who returned here from South Africa last Wednesday) at a smoke social. In the absence of the president of the club (Mr E. Feuerheerdt) Mr E. Hall (chairman of the district council) presided. Several toasts were honoured, including that of "The guest". During the evening the chairman, on behalf of the club, presented Trooper McLACHLAN with a handsome gold pendant in the form of a medal, suitably inscribed. Trooper McLACHLAN went unscathed through every campaign in which his contingent was engaged.

LUCINDALE.

June 19.

On Friday evening a smoke social, given by the Lucindale Defence Rifle Club, was held in the Institute Hall to welcome home Trooper J.F. McLACHLAN, who has been on active service in the Sonth African campaign.

Mr E. Hall presided over the gathering. The following toasts were proposed: — "The Guest", by Mr E. Hall, and while doing so he presented Trooper J.F. McLACHLAN with a very handsome gold medal in the shape of a Maltese cross, which bore the following inscription: — "From Lucindale Defence Rifle Club to Trooper J.F. McLachlan on his return from active service in the South African war. — 12/6/1901".

Trooper McLACHLAN suitably responded.

"The King" by Mr E. Bertram, "The Commonwealth Parliament" by Mr A. Stevens, "The Governor-General" by Mr R. Campbell, "The S.A. Parliament" by Mr D. Rabbitt, "The Governor" by Mr H. Brown, "Army and Navy" by Mr G.S. Scott, "Lord Roberts" by Trooper J. McLACHLAN, "Officers in War" by  Mr D. McFarlane, "Lucindale Defence Rifle Club" by Mr William Campbell, "President and Members" by Mr O. Foster, "Ladies" by Mr Sampson, and "The Chairman" by Mr R. Miller were the other toasts given.

Songs and recitations were given at suitable intervals, everything going off with great success.

Trooper J.F. McLACHLAN, of the Bushmen’s Contingent, who returned on Wednesday from South Africa, was last night tendered a smoke social by the members of the Lucindale Defence Rifle Club. Mr Hall, chairman of the district council, presided in the absence of the club’s president, Mr E. Feuerheerdt. Several toasts were honoured, that of “The guest” with musical honours. Mr Hall, on behalf of the rifle club, presented Mr McLACHLAN with a gold medal.
