Yea Chronicle, 12th June 1902

A public welcome home, in the form of a social, was accorded Corporal Chas. RIDD and Pte. Jas. CLARK, of the Fifth Contingent, at Molesworth, on Friday evening last. Over a hundred friends of the returned soldiers, from all parts of the district, attended. Mr McCann, on behalf of the residents presented Corporal RIDD with a heavy double gold Albert and Pte. CLARK with a similar chain and medal suitably inscribed on the reverse side, and, on the obverse side, with the words "Wilmansrust" and "Dodrog" – the former commemorative of that dreadful disaster of the "5th", at which Pte. CLARK was present and the latter the name of the place at which he was unfortunately so severely wounded. Both of the recipients were particularly happy in their replies, and gave short, interesting accounts of some of the most thrilling of their experiences. Highly appreciated songs and recitations were rendered during the evening by Messrs Luscombe, Simcocks and Breen, and phonographic selections by Mr Carter. After refreshments, which had been generously provided by all the ladies of the district, in their well-known lavish style, had been partaken of, the rest of the evening was given over to dancing. Amongst those present were Pte. SIMCOCKS (Glenferrie), 5th Contingent; Pte. R. DRYSDALE (Yea) 5th Contingent; and Pte. W. ALDONS (Yarck) Scottish Horse, comrades of the local boys. Mr J. Powell proved himself an efficient and energetic secretary and treasurer to the movement, and was more than pleased with the success of the whole proceedings. The chains and medal were supplied by Mr C. Begg, Yea.
