DEATH OF A MEMBER OF THE FIFTH CONTINGENT.

Cable news received from South Africa (says the "Gymple Times"), conveys the sad news that Private Herbert J. WHITE, son of our respected townsman Mr John White, engine driver, has been killed at Tabakplaatz. A telegram sent from Brisbane on Thursday by Lieutenant-Colonel Lyster, A.A.G., has confirmed the news, and tendered to Mr White the sincere sympathy of the Commandant and staff. The cause of death, it appears, was a gunshot wound accidentally inflicted. Deceased, who was a member of the fifth Queensland contingent, which left Queensland in the Templemore on March 6th last, was a promising young fellow, only 22 years old. He made many friends on this field and Mount Morgan, at which latter place he was presented with a gold medal and other tokens of goodwill prior to leaving for south Africa. They will deeply regret his untimely end, and condole with his relatives in their sad bereavement.
