A PLEASING CEREMONY took place on the evening of Thursday, August 22, in the yards of Messrs Rob. Stephenson & Co. Ltd., South Street, Newcastle. It was the presentation of Gold Medals to three of the workmen by the officials and employees on their return from South Africa, where they had served as non-commissioned officers with the 1st Newcastle-on-Tyne Royal Engineers (Volunteers). The workmen, having finished their day’s work, were met at the office door by Mr Walker, the general manager. He said that he in his travels came across a good many people, and often he was informed they had at one time or another worked as “Stephensons’ boys”. This they considered a distinction; but amongst those assembled there were some whom the officials were proud. The officials desired to show their appreciation of these men. They were the three young men who had been out in South Africa, and who had done their duty for their country. They had gone as Volunteers. The officials and workmen appreciated their services, and had decided to present them with Gold Medals. He asked Sgt. A. CRAGG and Corpls. T. ERRINGTON and JOBSON to accept the Medals, which were suitably inscribed. – Sergt. CRAGG replied on behalf of his colleagues. During the fourteen months they had been in South Africa under Lord Roberts and Lord Kitchener their experiences had been varied, and their training received at Stephenson’s had been of great service. Votes of thanks brought the gathering to a close.
