"The medal bears an inscription to the effect that the medal was presented in token of the bravery of Trooper Cairns, as related by his comrades. ..... Trooper Cairns has been recommended for the Distinguished Service Medal, and a little luck may have made him a V.C."

NEWCASTLE PRESENTATION TO A BERWICK VOLUNTEER.
Trooper T. CAIRNS, Berwick, of the Imperial Yeomanry, who recently returned from the Front, has been made the recipient of a handsome gold medal by Mr James Lowes, the well-known Newcastle sportsman. Mr Lowes made the presentation at his place, in the presence of a large company of sporting gentlemen, and Trooper CAIRNS suitably acknowledged the gift. The medal bears an inscription to the effect that the medal was presented in token of the bravery of Trooper CAIRNS, as related by his comrades. Trooper CAIRNS, who was formerly in Berwick-upon-Tweed Rifles, has been recommended for the Distinguished Service Medal, and a little luck might have made him a V.C.
