ST HELENS.
VOLUNTEER PRIZE DISTRIBUTION.
The annual presentation of prizes to the 2nd Volunteer Battalion South Lancashire Regiment took place in the Volunteer Hall last night. Enhanced interest was manifested in the proceedings by the handing of pendants to the members of the active service company of the battalions who returned from South Africa a few months ago, and the unveiling of a tablet commemorative of their services. There was a very large attendance, and Colonel Richard Pilkington, M.P., commanding officer, who occupied the chair, was supported by the Mayor (Colonel W.W. Pilkington), who recently retired from the command of the battalion; Major-General Lieth Ross (commanding Lancashire Infantry Volunteer Brigade), the officers of the regiment, &c. ……
Major-General Leith Ross then unveiled the South African War Memorial Tablet, amid applause, and distributed the pendants to the active service company. In the course of an address, he said that the career of the volunteers in South Africa had been watched with great interest in this country, and they were now more thought of and respected than ever they were before. They were proud of the patriotic spirit which had prompted the volunteers to go on active service; they were proud of them for their endurance and fatigue, and for the hardships and dangers they had passed through, and they were proud of their pluck and cheerfulness, which fully equalled that of the regular soldiers. (Applause). While they had that martial spirit in their volunteers he did not think there was any present need of conscription. What they had done had earned the gratitude and approbation of their Sovereign and the whole British Empire. (Applause). So far as the new volunteer regulations were concerned, he believed that volunteers would carry them out in spirit and in the letter. (Applause).
On the motion of Colonel R. Pilkington, M.P., a cordial vote of thanks was accorded to Major-General Leith Ross for his attendance.
The Mayor (Colonel W.W. Pilkington) afterwards presented the annual prizes and the long service medals awarded to members of the battalion.

2ND V.B. SOUTH LANCASHIRE PRIZE DISTRIBUTION AT ST HELENS.
Last night the annual prize distribution of the 2nd V.B. South Lancashire Regiment took place at St Helens, and was presided over by Colonel R. Pilkington, M.P. for the North Division, who has succeeded to the command of the battalion. The Colonel said the strength of the battalion was 33 officers, 60 sergeants, and 860 rank and file. Of these, 32 officers, 60 sergeants, and 847 rank and file were efficient. During the year three officers had passed in tactics. The annual inspection took place on the 14th June, when there were present on parade 24 officers, 5 permanent staff, and 777 rank and file. This year the figure of merit obtained by the battalion in shooting was 109, a considerable improvement on last year. The best shot among the trained Volunteers in the battalion was Sergeant R. Norbury.
Major-General Leith-Ross, at the request of the commanding officer, unveiled a brass tablet, which is to be erected in the hall, and upon which is engraved the names of 49 members of the battalion who volunteered for, and took part in, the war in South Africa, and to all who had returned the Mayor, on behalf of the officers of the regiment, presented handsome gold pendants.
Colonel R. Pilkington then referred to the services which his brother, Colonel W.W. Pilkington, had rendered to the battalion during his long connection with it. The past and present officers and men of the battalion had subscribed £600 for a portrait in oils of the retiring commanding officer, to hang in the Town Hall, and a replica for presentation to Mrs Pilkington.
Colonel W.W. Pilkington, in a reminiscent speech, acknowledged the great compliment which the past and present members of the battalion had paid him.
