RETURNED TROOPERS.

At the Templeton Hotel on Friday night a social was held, when a presentation was made in honour of the return of Sergeant J.R. HESP, of the Third Contingent. Owing to his absence in Auckland, Mrs Dawson, on behalf of the subscribers, handed to his father (Mr J. R. Hesp) a gold Maltese cross, suitably inscribed, and requesting him to forward it to his son, with the warm wishes of his Templeton friends. Songs and recitations filled up the rest, of the evening. A welcome social is to be tendered to Corporal P. A. CHAPLIN in the Templeton School on Friday.

WELCOME TO RETURNED TROOPER.

A "welcome home" social was held in the Templeton School on Friday in honour of the return of Corporal Peter A. CHAPLIN, of the Fifth Contingent. Mr Geo. Witty presided, and there were present, in addition to Corporal CHAPLIN, several of his comrades in arms and officers of volunteer corps. Songs and recitations were contributed by Misses Sandford and Benjamin, and Messrs Sinclair, Burns, and Spicer. Miss Benjamin also played a pianoforte piece and accompanied. Several glees were also very nicely sung by members of St Saviour's choir, under Mrs William Bailey's conductorship. At an interval, short addresses of welcome were delivered by the chairman and Messrs D.C. Burns, C. Benjamin, G.P. Kissel, and D. Sinclair, and Mr Witty, on behalf of Corporal CHAPLIN's friends in the Templeton and surrounding district, presented him with a handsome gold Maltese cross, suitably inscribed. Corporal CHAPLIN replied, and was followed by Quartermaster-Sergeant Berland, who exhibited a number of curios from Africa, and explained their use.
