WELCOME TO DURHAM’S AT USHAW MOOR.

A local committee was formed a few weeks ago with the object of making preparations for suitably welcoming three local men, who have been out in South Africa with the 4th Durham Light Infantry (Militia). The last of the trio, Corporal J. HALPIN, arrived at Ushaw Moor Station on Friday night with the 6.40 p.m. from Durham. Amongst some hundreds of people who were awaiting his arrival were the committee and members of the Ushaw Moor football club, both teams wearing their playing costume, carrying torch lights. On alighting from the train, Corporal HALPIN was immediately shouldered and carried to a brake. The procession was headed by the New Brancepeth Silver Model Prize Band, under the leadership of Mr W. Calvert, and the torches made a brilliant display. Later Corporal and Mrs HALPIN led off a dance in a large wooden shed, where Mr J. Vickers acted as M.C.  Mr W. Fennick supplied the music.

On Saturday night a smoking concert took place at Mr A. Wood’s Station Hotel. Col. Leadbitter Smith presided, with Mr T.C. Stobart, manager at Ushaw moor, in the vice-chair, supported by the colliery officials and local gentlemen. Col. Smith, in a few well-chosen remarks, presented gold medals suitably inscribed to W.T. ALLAN first, as the oldest and longest service man; secondly to Corporal G. WILSON, of Baden-Powell’s Police; and lastly, but not least, to Corporal HALPIN, as one of the Colonel’s late regiment.

The recipients suitably replied, and the rest of the evening was spent in harmony, concluding with “God Save the King”.
