Presentation made at the Pigeons Hotel, Romford Road.
Obverse: "C.I.V.; 1st Essex Volunteer Artillery; South African War Contingent, 1899-1900" (in enamels).
Reverse: "Presented by forty patriotic friends of West Ham to ________, November 22nd, 1900".
Medals described as having blue enamel with gold lettering.

At the Pigeons Hotel, Romford Road, the members of the First Essex Volunteer Artillery who were members of the C.I.V. were entertained at dinner, and were presented with gold medals. These had faces of blue enamel, on which were the words in gold letters: – “C.I.V.; 1st Essex Volunteer Artillery; South African War Contingent, 1899-1900”. On the reverse side were the words: – “Presented by forty patriotic friends of West Ham to __________ , November, 22nd, 1900”. A medal has also been struck in memory of Sergt. CARR, and will be handed to the respected soldier’s mother.
