South African units

Standerton was founded in 1878 on a farm called Grootverlangen.  It was named after its owner Commandant Adriaan H. Stander.   Standerson was granted municipal status in 1903^.

 

During the First Boer War, a British unit was besieged by Boer forces who shelled them from a nearby hill.  The besieged held out until the end of the war in February 1881.
