Molteno is in the Eastern Cape, 20 miles northwest of Sterkstroom. It was founded in 1874, some 22 years after coal was discovered in the area by George Vice, the founder of Molteno. The town was named after Sir John Molteno, then Prime Minister of the Cape.
During the Boer War the town was used to launch the attack on Stormberg on 9 Dec 1899. Later that month, the town was placed under martial law.
