From The Graphic 16 February 1901.

The first parade of the new Town Guard at Cape Town.

The members of the newly enrolled Town Guard t Cape Town recently made their first appearance as a unit, when the various companies were inspected on the Grand Parade by Colonel Cooper, Base Commandant, who complimented the men on their smart bearing.

After the late inroads by the Boers into Cape Colony, the inhabitants were advised to arm themselves against a further invasion. As a result a Town Guard has been enrolled in Cape Town. According to recent telegrams this Guard has grown until it is 9,500 strong. Most of the men wear khaki uniforms and are armed with Lee-Metford rifles, and the artillery, cavalry and cyclists are fully equipped. Everyone is astonished at the rapidity with which men have assumed a soldierly appearance and have mastered the element of drill.

Great photo of the Cape Town Young Mens Christian Association (YMCA) - included there is F.E. Cairncross who I believe to be Frank E Cairncross 1877-1929.

He does not appear to have received the QSA going by the name search on the this excellent website. It does say elsewhere "Several Town Guard units were based in and around Cape Town. None of them received medals." - his two relations - Thomas George Cairncross and James Richard Cairncross both come out in name search source "Attestation papers WO126" - but not Frank.

A question: although it is said clearly that "Several Town Guard units were based in and around Cape Town. None of them received medals." - is there a reason for this given by those who decided such things? and at what point - as one moved further away from Cape Town, did Town Guard units qualify?
