Gents,

Once again I am in need of some assistance from one of our SA based members. I acquired the QSA to 6020 Pte J.Hennessy of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers (Mounted Infantry) with clasps Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg & Driefontein (all 3 clasps rare to regiment). Private Hennessy died of disease on 12 May 1900 at Bloemfontein and I would love to get a photo of his grave. Could some kind soul help?

Best wishes,

Des

A brief look at Watt, seems to suggest his name is on the "main monument" at this cemetery, so he may not have a marked grave, I hope he still does, sadly, this cemetery is not the best kept, with stones damaged and many broken deliberately, moreover, not just by criminals, some original Anglo Boer War crosses have not only been stolen, but, a number have been inexplicably removed by the people who work there.
All very disappointing.

I've been to the President Avenue Cemetery in Bloemfontein and there are no rows of metals crosses of the type that still survive in some cemeteries. There is the main memorial as Frank mentions and there are a number of regimental memorials but the only individual graves to survive are headstones to officers and some colonials.

Regards

David

I really don't know what to think, the situation would appear to be actually far worse than I had originally thought, I had heard many awful stories about the original crosses being torn up, some stolen, some deliberately destroyed, names ground off, others turned into fencing and so on.
In a commonwealth country too, truly incomprehensible and sickening.
