I've found a grave in Newton-le-Willows Cemetery on which John William Jubson of the Royal Garrison Artillery is commemorated. The lower part of the inscription is badly eroded, but I can read that he 'Died on Duty Set -- 1901/ Aged -- years and was interred/ ....

His parents were John and Grace Jubson

Can anyone fill in the blanks, please?

I checked the Palmer roll for "J.Jubson" and (just in case) "J.Jobson" and there was no entry. Perhaps he was not serving in SA at the time of his death?

Hello David
I have checked the South Africa Field Force casualty list for 1901 (Oaklands 1972 ) under Jubson and Jobson but found no entry for either name pertaining to the RGA

Thanks for your efforts - I've just discovered that the records for the cemetery are online - and have found that the family name is JUDSON ... and that John William is not registered as being buried in the grave.
I'm recording for the IWM's War Memorials Register, which has a category for 'Additions to gravestones', covering family commemorations for casualties buried or commemorated elsewhere. Whilst scanning the inscriptions I'm tuned to looking for clues - and the mention of a military unit and a date fitting the years of a conflict make me stop and look harder - unfortunately the erosion on this grave makes it impossible to read further information which was once legible.

Just now I had a look at the Palmer Casualty roll (which is based on the official SAFF/NFF Casualty lists with all the imperfections therein) and there are a couple of JUDSONS;
(1) Judson, J (no rank shown) who served with Damant's Horse and was severely wounded at Tafel Kop on 20/12/01
(2) "2391 Pte.Judson, J of 1st York and Lancs Regt" who was wounded at Venter's Spruit on 20/1/00.
Regretfully, nothing for the RGA. Might help and might not.
