Looking for my Great Uncle Ernest Jeffs. His medals and battle bars were held in trust by NZDF, where he emigrated to after the Boer War as he enlisted in London. He died there in NZ in 1947. I applied for his medals from the NZDF and was told they were misplaced, so I have no idea what group he was in. Can anyone help me.

I live in Australia.

Phil,

Looking at the rolls, there are E Jeffs in the following units during the Boer War:

6th Warwick Regiment (7243 Private). His forename appears to be Edgar
Kaffrarian Rifles (1853 Private). His forename was Ernest. Served 8 Feb 1901 to 12 Aug 1901

From the nominal roll: www.angloboerwar.com/unit-information/so...arian-rifles?start=1

With the Kaffrarian Rifles he earned the clasps Cape Colony and South Africa 1901. A note on the roll says the South Africa 1901 clasp was issued in 1907 to his father, 79 Longley Road, Tooting, London.

Is that him?

David - I think you have scored a goal in one.

An Ernest James Jeffs who died in Auckland on 26th May 1947 appears on 23 Public Family Trees on Ancestry - one of them has really gone to town on Ernest. It does not show he served in the Boer War but it has his service record for WW1 and this is the first page - look at his answer to Q13.

To apparently cement matters the 1901 census shows his father, Charles, living at 79 Longley Road, Tooting and it has two photos of Ernest supplied by a Phil Jeffs.

Thank you for confirming that, Smethwick.

That confirms 6 months with the Kaffrarian Rifles and fills in a piece of the puzzle for Phil.

Dear David,

I thank you very much for your reply to me. I should have informed in my post that Ernest was in the Kaffarian Rifles, but I thought the Boer War was adequate when writing.

It is such a shame his medals were misplaced by NZDF as the bars would have shown me the actions he was involved in, but you have done that for me now as I could not link him up as you fortunately did.

I will now have to read up on Cape Colony and South Africa 1901, although they do not sound like battles to me, do you know David .

Once again, I thank you for helping me.

Phil Jeffs.
